What is a Chimney Damper?
The chimney damper is found inside the chimney flue and serves as a lid or seal that prevents cold air from entering your home when the fireplace isn’t in use. When there is a fire in your fireplace, the damper should be opened to allow the smoke to escape through the chimney.
Most chimney dampers can be operated through a chain hanging near the front and top portion of the firebox. The chain can be pulled to open or close the damper as necessary.
Types of Dampers
There are two types of chimney dampers. They differ based on where they are located within the chimney and the materials used in their construction.
A throat damper is located in the chimney just above the firebox. It’s typically a simple metal plate that can flap open or closed depending on whether the chimney is in use or not. W
Top-sealing dampers are located near the top of the flue. They are usually made with a rubber gasket that allows for a tighter seal than throat dampers. Besides protecting the chimney from downdrafts of cold air, they also prevent animals and precipitation from entering the flue.
Common Chimney Damper Problems
Several common issues could affect your chimney damper, but they generally fit into at least one of three categories:
1. Cold Air Drafts
If your damper is damaged or broken, you may find that cold air is down-drafting through the chimney and lowering your home’s interior temperature.
2. Damper Won’t Close or Open
If the damper won’t close, you can experience various issues, such as the aforementioned cold air drafts. If the damper doesn’t open, smoke won’t escape through the chimney when you use your fireplace. This can create a smoke hazard within your home.
3. Incorrect Operation
If the damper place is cracked, off-track, or otherwise broken, you will find it unable to open and close as it should. The damper may move when you pull its chain, but it may not form as tight of a seal as it should or partially block smoke from escaping.
